Orca Bay Foods, the supplier of Trader Joe’s Gluten-Free Battered Halibut, has called for a recall of the frozen fish over fears of allergic reactions to milk and wheat. The allergens do not appear as one of the ingredients listed on the pack, meaning that consumers who are allergic to milk and wheat might consume the frozen fish and experience allergic health reactions.
The fish is being recalled in Trader Joe’s stores in 19 states across the country.
Seattle based Orca Bay Foods announced the recall on FDA’s website. According to Orca Bay Foods’ statement on the website, 4,459 pounds of 10-ounce boxes of the frozen fish are being recalled to avoid serious health risks and possible complications in users who are allergic to wheat and milk. The supplier also stated that there has been no report of allergic reactions from people who have purchased the fish at the time of recall, but it is still necessary to call for a recall, CNN reports.
Trader Joe announced on its website that the affected fish has been taken off its shelves and destroyed. The affected products have code 537312620 and their labels state that they should be consumed by November 5, 2021. This information is provided in a space at the end of the 10-ounce boxes. The product SKU (Store Keeping Unit) is 00503822.
The Gluten-Free Battered Fish was sold in Trader Joe’s stores in 19 states which include Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and Wisconsin according to the supplier’s statement on the FDA’s website.
Trader Joe’s has urged buyers that have a history of allergic reactions to milk or wheat to avoid eating the frozen fish. “We urge you to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund,” the retail store announced.
Orca Bay Foods, the supplier of the fish has also cautioned buyers with allergic reactions to wheat and milk against eating the fish stating that it can cause “serious or life-threatening allergic reactions in people who are allergic to wheat and milk”
Trader Joe’s has urged buyers to throw away the affected products if they or a family member is allergic to the substance or return the products to their stores to get a full refund.
