The judge presiding over the legal tussle between Britney Spears and her father James Spears has turned down the request to remove Britney’s father from his position as head of the court-ordered conservatorship entered into in 2008. The judge said she would examine future petitions for Jamie’s suspension or full removal, Pitchfork reports.
Britney Spears’ lawyer is prepared to file further petitions to remove her father as the conservator instilled by the court. “My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father. She will not perform again if her father is in charge of her career,” attorney Samuel D. Ingham III told the presiding judge.
In defense, Jamie’s attorney Vivian Lee Thoreen vehemently canvassed that James should remain as conservator. In the 12 years of taking over, she opined that he had around her business, noting Britney was in debt in 2008 and that now her empire is worth $60 million, Yahoo News writes.
Since 2008, Britney Spears has not had full legal control over her life. A Los Angeles Court placed the pop star under legal guardianship when she struggled with her mental health in 2007. Since then, James, her legal guardian, and father, had control of her finances and career, a duty he shared with her attorney, Andrew, who basically controlled and exercised rights over Britney’s assets.
Although in 2019, Jodi Montgomery took over as an independent care manager when James stepped aside for health reasons. According to Entertainment Tonight, Britney Spears strongly prefers Montgomery to remain as her conservator to her dad.
It’s over 12 years that James Spears has worked in this conservatorship situation for the pop star, the long duration of the role has made it a subject of public criticism, and many conclude that it is quite an unnecessary and obsessive control of Britney’s life and her two children. He admitted that his relationship with his daughter has always been estranged.
Despite this entire family brawl, the ‘Free Britney’ movement is actively on. Some of Britney’s fans came together to protest and campaign for the pop star’s freedom. They believe she is being held prisoner by her family and team.
Unfettered by her situation, Britney’s recent video on social media radiates light of hope and a fragrance of optimism. She said, “I know that there have been a lot of comments and a lot of people saying a lot of different things about me, but I just want to let you guys know that I am fine. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
