A health worker who received a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in New York City experienced a “serious adverse event” in a rare turnout of events in New York. The city health department said more than 30,000 people in NYC had received COVID-19 vaccinations in the city with only one suffering severe side effects, Fox News reports.
The unnamed health official who works with the Mount Sinai system has been treated and is now in stable condition. The city health department notified the CDC of the situation and continues to monitor other recipients for adverse health reactions, while the distribution of the vaccine remains ongoing.
The CDC recommends that in the situation where an individual reacts to one of the components of a vaccine, the administration of such a specific vaccine should be avoided to the individual; and people should speak to their doctors for advice if they react to vaccines or injectable therapies.
“With more than 30,000 COVID-19 vaccinations administered in New York City, we have received a single report of a serious adverse event in a health care worker,” the health department stated. “We will continue to move forward with the coronavirus vaccine distribution to ensure that health care workers and nursing home staff and residents are protected against COVID-19.”
The CDC goes on to recommend that people who experience allergic reactions to certain foods, pet, latex, or some other environmental factors should still receive the coronavirus vaccinations. This includes people with a family history of severe reactions to oral drugs, ABC7 writes.
“CDC recommends that people with a history of severe allergic reactions not related to vaccines or injectable medications – such as allergies to food, pet, venom, environmental, or latex – may still get vaccinated,” the CDC said. “People with a history of allergies to oral medications or family history of severe allergic reactions, or who might have had a milder [sic] allergy to vaccines (no anaphylaxis) – may also still get vaccinated.”
The NYC case is not the first instance of people reacting severely to COVID-19 vaccinations. Last week, a health worker in Alaska experienced severe reactions within 10 minutes of getting vaccinated, and there have been pockets of reports that a few people reacted to the drug across the United States.
Despite the reactions to the vaccines, health authorities across the country maintain that it is normal for some people to suffer side effects or allergic reactions to vaccines and that the drugs remain safe and effective for everyone who gets administered with it. Top government officials and city administrators who have received the COVID-19 vaccines report that the drugs are safe and required for country-wide protection against the pandemic.
