The mysterious monolith that went viral after it was suddenly found by a group of officials in Utah on November 18 has disappeared, according to reports – and a similar one has been discovered in Romania, Daily Mail reports.
The officials discovered the strange monolith in a Utah desert and it became an instant internet sensation with many people trooping to the desert to see it. On November 27, officials reported that the monolith has disappeared as mysteriously as it appeared and on that same day a similar but not exact object was discovered in Romania.
The Romanian monolith was discovered on a hill in the Romanian city of Piatra Neamt. The three-sided object has two different lengths with one side longer than the other two. The longer side which faces Mount Ceahlau “Holy Mountain” is about 13 feet in length while the shorter side is about 9.8 feet. The mysterious Romanian structure has also disappeared the way it appeared, without anyone’s knowledge. It was discovered missing on Tuesday, December 1, about four days after it appeared.
The two monoliths look similar and both appeared and disappeared mysteriously. The Utah monolith appeared to be very smooth while the one discovered in Romania had circled patterns inscribed in it and seems to be rougher than the other one. Both monoliths have sparked conspiracy theories on different social media platforms with many parties comparing the structure to a similar one used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, a 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie.
The movie was adapted from a novel of the same title written by Arthur C. Clarke. In his book, Clarke tells the story of how an alien tribe installed a monolith on Earth about three million years ago. The inhabitants of the Earth in the story, a race of dying apes, were saved through the monolith. The monolith scanned their brain functions and helped them evolve through the development of tools that helped them survive.
Through monoliths, Clarke wrote, aliens encourage the development of intelligent life forms in different galaxies. The book was written before the first mission landed on the moon but it delves into the imagined workings of space exploration. The Utah monolith was miles down an untarred road in the desert but theorists found their way there, according to officials who reported that the tourists polluted the area before they left.
“The private property on which it was installed is an archaeological site that is protected by law,” Rocsana Josanu, an official of Neamt Culture and Heritage said. “Before any object can be installed, you have to get permission to do so from the institution and the Ministry of Culture. That did not happen, so we are looking into the incident.”
According to Google Maps, the Utah monolith was installed sometime during late 2015–2016 before it was removed last week. Experts project that it must be about 40 years old since the elements did not affect its material quality. The local police department in Utah stated that they will not investigate the appearance and disappearance of the structure.
