Following the sad news of the death of renowned actor Sean Connery, tributes continue to pour in as people struggle to come to terms with the great loss. Connery, who played the role of James Bond for many years, died on October 31 at the age of 90.
Sean’s wife, Micheline Roquebrune, has revealed that the notable actor of Scottish origin struggled with dementia in the latter part of his life. She lamented that the ailment affected his mental reasoning and took a toll on him.
“It was no life for him.” Roquebrune, 91, said. “He was not able to express himself latterly. At least he died in his sleep, and it was just so peaceful. I was with him all the time; and he just slipped away. It was what he wanted. He had dementia, and it took its toll on him. He got his final wish to slip away without any fuss.”
Roquebrune, who was married to Sean for 45 years, ruminated over their recently celebrated wedding anniversary in May at their Bahamas home. As Connery’s second wife after ending his marriage with Diane Cilento, an Australian actress, Roquebrune described her marriage with the late Oscar award-winning actor as gorgeous and a wonderful life spent together.
Micheline described her late husband as a rare and classic man she would find hard to live without. However, she comforted herself with the thought that though her wonderful life with Connery couldn’t have lasted forever, she is glad he died a peaceful death.
US President Donald Trump took to his Twitter account on November 1 to describe the late actor as a legendary actor and a very great man.
In his tribute to him, Trump wrote that “all I needed, everything went swimmingly from there. He was so highly regarded and respected in Scotland and beyond, that years of future turmoil was avoided. Sean was a great actor and an even greater man. Sincere condolences to his family.”
Sean Connery’s professional career as an actor spanned over 50 years. He won an Oscar award in 1988 for his role as Best Supporting Actor in the movie The Untouchables and was the first actor to bring the famous role of James Bond to life. Sean also acted in other remarkable movie productions such as Indiana Jones, The Hunt for Red October, The Rock Highlander, and Last Crusade.
He was a recipient of several awards besides the Oscar of 1988. He won three Golden Globes, which included a Henrietta Award and a Cecil B. DeMille Award. He also bagged two BAFTA Awards, which included a BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award. He retired from active acting in 2006.
